Selena Gomez Removes Video Following Backlash Over Immigration Remarks: “Apparently, Showing Empathy Isn’t Okay”

Selena Gomez faced criticism after posting, then deleting, a video of herself emotionally discussing her distress over the immigration policies introduced under President Donald Trump’s regime.

Gomez, who’s a renowned singer and actress, getting huge attention for her Oscar-nominated role in Emilia Perez, posted a tearful video on her Instagram Story on January 26. In the clip, Gomez expressed her distress, saying, “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

The video featured a caption with a Mexican flag emoji and the phrase “I’m sorry.”

While numerous fans praised Gomez for her emotional openness and empathy, some criticized her for speaking out, claiming she was using the moment for attention. Social media was flooded with mixed responses, with critics calling her post “overdramatic” and a “publicity stunt.”

As backlash grew with time, Gomez finally took down the video and posted a brief follow-up message on her Story, which has also been removed. “Apparently, it’s not okay to show empathy for people,” she wrote in response to the criticism.

Gomez’s post coincided with an announcement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) about a major operation that resulted in up to 956 arrests—the largest number since Trump resumed office. This has sparked a widespread national discussion.

Gomez has openly opposed Trump’s policies before. During the Los Angeles premiere of Emilia Perez in October, she told Variety, “I definitely want to stand by my people.”
