George Clooney expressed that despite his desire to star in a sitcom, Matthew Perry’s portrayal of Chandler on Friends didn’t bring him the joy, happiness, or peace he sought.

George Clooney recently shared poignant insights into Matthew Perry’s life. Reflecting on their friendship that began when Perry was just 16, Clooney revealed a different side of the Friends actor, shedding light on Perry’s aspirations and sentiments beyond the cameras.

Speaking with Deadline in an interview published on December 19, Clooney recalled their earlier days, playing paddle tennis together, emphasizing Perry’s humor and vibrant personality.

Perry often expressed his yearning to secure a role in a sitcom, expressing that achieving this would bring him ultimate happiness.

Despite landing the iconic role of Chandler Bing on Friends—a character he portrayed from 1994 to 2004—Perry still grappled with a sense of unfulfillment.

Clooney noted that even though Friends was among the best shows, Perry didn’t find the contentment or joy he had anticipated.

Observing Perry’s journey while being neighbors on the Warner Brothers lot, Clooney mentioned that it was challenging to witness Perry’s internal struggles.

Despite their proximity, they couldn’t discern the depth of Perry’s emotions, only realizing that he wasn’t experiencing the happiness they had hoped for him.

At 62 years old, Clooney confessed he wasn’t aware of the severity of Perry’s battles with addiction, details that Perry later disclosed in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

Reflecting on the revelations within Perry’s memoir, Clooney expressed his shock at learning about Perry’s struggles, including the consumption of around 12 Vicodin pills per day. Clooney emphasized how the distressing accounts shed light on the deeper complexities of Perry’s experiences.

Moreover, Clooney highlighted a profound lesson from Perry’s journey, underscoring that despite achieving success and financial stability, genuine happiness doesn’t inherently accompany these accomplishments.

He emphasized the importance of inner contentment and finding fulfillment within oneself and in life as a whole.

Perry tragically passed away in October while in his hot tub. Initially categorized as an accidental drowning, an official medical report later revealed that the actor’s cause of death was due to the “acute effects of ketamine.” The autopsy report, released on Friday, also cited drowning, coronary artery disease, and the impact of an opioid as contributing factors to his passing.

Clooney’s recent disclosures led fans to speculate that Perry’s repeated assertions of not wanting to be solely remembered for his role in ‘Friends’ but rather for his philanthropic endeavors might have been influenced by these personal struggles.
