It seems Will Smith is paying the price of slapping comedian Chris Rock while attending the 94th Oscars awards ceremony. Soon after the episode, the Hollywood star was banned from attending the Oscars along with any other Academy related events for a period of 10 years.

Now, the latest is that Will Smith’s dream project Emancipation has been pushed to 2023. As per a report published in Variety, the makers of Emancipation expected to drop the film on the upcoming fall festival circuit.

But now, the film has been delayed for one year. The film is from Apple and to be produced by his production company named Westbrook Studios. As per the latest report, they are planning to release it in 2023.

Emancipation is to be directed by Antoine Fuqua which has become Will Smith’s first release after his spat with comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars awards ceremony.

Even at this time, the studio didn’t release any official statement regarding the delay of the film, it’s very much expected to be streamer’s next potential awards project.

At the same time, Apple has also not shared any official date of the film’s release. The concerned officials only stated that it’s an unspoken truth and the action drama won’t be hitting the platform in 2022.

Another report suggests that there has been some internal discussions going on between filmmakers and Apple executives regarding the film’s delay would impact.

Will Smith’s Upcoming Film Emancipation Pushed to 2023

Some experts are relating the delay of Will Smith’s Emancipation with the recent spat happened with the comedian at the Oscars. It’s being named as slap controversy. Other sources maintained that Fuqua is still in the post production stage and therefore won’t be ready in 2022.

If you look at the film’s journey so far, it had to face so many delays in the past mainly because of moving the production from Georgia to Louisiana. It’s because of the state’s voting restrictions laws. Later, it happened due to the rising number of Covid cases in August 2021.

Well, there is another contributing factor associated with the delay of the film. It’s none other than the packed slate for Apple in 2nd half of the year. And so, a number of his films could be marketed for a substantial awards push.

It’s being also said that the company will soon have ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’, who’s the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winner with none other than Dakota Johnson. It’s going to be dropped on June 17 before it unveils ‘Luck’ from its newly acquired Skydance Animation on August 5.

Apart from all other hindrances, it’s known that Apple also has a number of unexpected projects including Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Killers of the Flower Moon’ starring Jesse Plemons and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Emancipation mainly stars Ben Foster that revolves around the story of a runaway slave who tries hard to escape his plantation owners. The film is written by Bill Collage and will also be produced by Jon Mone, Joey McFarland and Todd Black.
