Shabana Azmi Acknowledges Her Privilege Over Husband Javed Akhtar: “I Am Ankur, He Is Sholay”

In a recent interview with Filmfare, actor Shabana Azmi opened up about feeling more privileged than her husband, writer Javed Akhtar.

She recalled a friend of Javed’s once telling her that while she is “Ankur,” he is “Sholay.” Shabana mentioned that she’s come to terms with their differences over time.

Shabana Azmi opened up about some advice Javed Akhtar’s friend once gave her. She recalled, “When we were at the Khandala house, I thought it was just going to be a weekend home. I didn’t realize Javed envisioned it as a mansion.

That led to daily arguments between us. One day, his best friend, Farhan Mujib, said to me, ‘Look, Shabana, a home fulfils a person’s dream. This man has slept on the streets, he’s been homeless. So, this house is his dream.'”

Shabana Azmi recalled someone telling her, “You’ve lived a very comfortable life. You can’t even imagine what he’s been through.

Don’t forget, you are Ankur and he is Sholay.” She found that comparison to be spot on, adding, “In everything we do, I am Ankur and he is Sholay. I’ve finally come to accept it. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar got married back in 1984. According to reports, their first meeting happened at the home of Shabana’s father, the celebrated poet Kaifi Azmi.

Before his marriage to Shabana, Javed was previously married to Honey Irani, with whom he has two children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar.

Shabana Azmi last appeared in the web series Dabba Cartel. Up next, she’ll be seen in Lahore 1947, a film directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, where she’ll share the screen with Ali Fazal, Sunny Deol, and more.
