Kim Kardashian is urging for the release of Erik and Lyle Menendez, asserting that they endured prolonged abuse. In an article for NBC News, she highlights their deservingness for another chance at freedom, citing their commendable conduct in prison and the backing they receive from family members. The case has drawn renewed attention following the review of new evidence by Los Angeles prosecutors.
Kim Kardashian is leveraging her influence to advocate for criminal justice reform, specifically calling for the release of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989.
In an essay for NBC News, she urged a reconsideration of their life sentences, asserting that the brothers were victims of prolonged abuse and merit another opportunity for freedom.
Kim’s essay was published shortly after reports surfaced that Los Angeles prosecutors are re-evaluating new evidence in the case, following a request from the Menendez brothers’ legal team to overturn their convictions. In her piece, she defended them, highlighting their “exemplary disciplinary records.”
“I have spent time with Lyle and Erik; they are not monsters. They are compassionate, intelligent, and honest individuals. While incarcerated, both have maintained outstanding disciplinary records. They have earned several college degrees, served as caregivers for elderly inmates in hospice, and acted as mentors in college programs, demonstrating their commitment to giving back. During my visit to the prison three weeks ago, one of the wardens expressed that he would feel comfortable having them as neighbors. Additionally, 24 family members, including siblings of their parents, have publicly supported Lyle and Erik and respectfully urged the justice system to grant them freedom,” Kim elaborated.
Her essay aligns with a resurgence of interest in the Menendez case, as prosecutors in Los Angeles reassess new evidence prompted by a request from the brothers’ attorneys. Kardashian also mentioned that 24 family members, including their parents’ relatives, have issued statements advocating for the brothers’ release.
This renewed focus on the Menendez trial comes after the debut of Netflix’s true-crime series Monsters, which premiered in late September and reignited public interest in the case.
