BBC Arts has partnered with the Academy Award-winning production company Passion Pictures (recognized for works such as “Searching for Sugar Man” centered on Elizabeth Taylor.

Titled “Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar,” the series will be both executive produced by and feature Kim Kardashian. The BBC unveiled this project on Monday, highlighting Taylor’s iconic status as one of Hollywood’s most renowned names.

Produced under the executive direction of Kari Lia, Hamish Fergusson, and Kardashian, the series guarantees exclusive insights with “privileged access to those who knew her best, including members of Elizabeth Taylor’s family, friends, and colleagues from throughout her stellar career.”

The documentary pledges to highlight the journey of “a superstar who transformed not just Hollywood but fame itself, as she went from child star to the highest-paid actress in the world.”

The show description challenges the traditional portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor’s life, stating, “For too long, the story of Elizabeth Taylor has been framed as a soap opera—eight marriages, diamonds, and addictions.” This series endeavors to grant Elizabeth Taylor the acknowledgment she rightfully deserves in all her facets: as an actor, rebel, business mogul, and activist. It seeks to unveil how Taylor pioneered the blueprint for contemporary celebrity, providing a more nuanced depiction of her life and influence.

The series will extensively explore the legendary star’s artistry and approach as an actor, delving into “how she redefined the essence of fame.” It will highlight her groundbreaking achievements in Hollywood, where she shattered the glass ceiling. Additionally, the documentary will showcase her evolution into a billion-dollar businesswoman, as well as her roles as an activist and advocate.

The series pledges to utilize previously unreleased audio tapes, interviews, and unseen TV footage, along with an extensive archive of her films. It will incorporate interviews with various personalities who had a personal connection with Taylor, including Kardashian, who conducted the final interview before her passing. Other interviewees include Dame Joan Collins, a friend and contemporary of Taylor in Hollywood, Margaret O’Brien, who attended school with her on the MGM backlot, close friend Carole Bayer Sager, leading scientist Dr. Anthony Fauci, who collaborated with Elizabeth in the AIDS advocacy, and more.

Kim Kardashian expressed, “Elizabeth Taylor was unapologetically herself, a fighter. She is proof that you can keep evolving and changing and have different chapters in your life — and she paved the way for all of us who came after her with that blueprint.”

Alistair Pegg, the commissioning editor at the BBC, added, “This exciting series promises a new understanding of Elizabeth Taylor — both her technique and power as an actor, and her capacity for reinventing herself.”

The international distribution of the production will be handled by Fremantle. “Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar” is currently in production and is scheduled to air in the U.K. on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
