Luca Guadagnino is in discussions to direct a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis‘s acclaimed horror novel American Psycho, first published in 1991. The story was famously adapted into a film in 2000, where Christian Bale’s performance received widespread acclaim.

The screenplay for the upcoming adaptation will be crafted by Scott Z. Burns, known for his work on Contagion, The Bourne Ultimatum, and The Report, as reported by Deadline.

The narrative centers on Patrick Bateman, a wealthy and egotistical Manhattan investment banker who secretly indulges in a violent double life as a serial killer.

Lionsgate is behind the project, with Frenesy Films taking on production duties. Sam Pressman, son of Edward R. Pressman, who produced the original film through Pressman Film, is on board as an executive producer.

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm, saying, “We’re delighted to welcome an accomplished filmmaker like Luca to our roster. He’s a remarkable artist and perfectly suited to breathe new life into this influential and timeless material.”

Guadagnino, who has previously directed Call Me By Your Name, A Bigger Splash, Bones and All, Suspiria, and Challengers, recently finished his latest project, Queer, starring Daniel Craig.

He’s currently involved in the project “After the Hunt,” which stars Julia Roberts in the lead role.
