Dwayne Johnson’s adventure film Jungle Cruise collected over $34 million in theatres and earned another $30 million on OTT platforms. The competition is already fierce after the film managed to perform at this level.
Jungle Cruise released on July 21, 2021 with a budget of $200 million starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in their respective pivotal roles.
To everybody’s surprise, the film managed to debut somewhat ahead of expectations despite concerns regarding the ongoing COVID-19 crisis due to delta variant.
Although, it managed to collect $34 million in the first weekend, but it looks quite disappointing for a film which has been produced with a whopping budget of $200 million. The under performance of the film at the domestic box office would definitely make the makers feel disappointed at some level.
In the presence of the pandemic, it seems like theatrical business of films might go up in the time to come, but there is no guarantee, especially in the presence of the 3rd wave of coronavirus.
So, the verdict is clear that states the film couldn’t manage to prove its worth and had to settle down with a mere $34 million at the domestic box office.
This is why people say that with the price tag of $200 million, it should have made a business of at least $500 million globally.
Considering the film’s haul on OTT platforms, it managed to collect another $30 million globally. Although, the amount looks great but it’s not even half of what Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Black Widow’ earned.
If you consider the film’s performance at the International box office, it managed to collect $30 million from 26 overseas locations and making its overall worldwide collection up to $61.5 million.
Jungle Cruise is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra which is basically an adventure film starring Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons and Paul Giamatti in their lead roles. The film is based on the concept of theme park ride.
The film is believed to set in the 20th century (at the time of the first world war) and revolves around a dubious looking captain (Johnson) who manages to take the most fearless and adventurous British scientist (Emily Blunt) and her brother (Whitehall) on a secret mission.
The above mission is all about Tree of Life which is known to possess amazing healing power.
As per the analysis given by most experts, people simply refrained to go to theatres to watch movies due to the upcoming COVID-19 crisis due to the new variant of coronavirus while some other experts simply don’t feel the same.
David A. Gross who basically runs his own movie consulting firm believes that the makers don’t have to blame COVID-19 pandemic for the underperformance of a film at all times. And so, the rise and fall of a movie at the box office is not going to be based on the pandemic but on the movie itself.
He further believes that Jungle Cruise is one of the best classic Hollywood adventure films but this particular genre has lost its edge now. There are some other films that have been placed at the second slot in terms of their box office collection.
Films like The Green Knight and Universal’s ‘Old’ seem to have locked their positions at the second place. Some experts believe that ‘Old’ has everything that the audience would love to watch. And so, Universal’s Old is expected to surpass once final numbers are revealed.
Old is basically a thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan made with a budget of $18 million and released on July 21, 2021. The film managed to debut with $16.5 million in its first weekend. It collected a sum of $30 million at domestic ticket sales.
Another recently released film titled The Green Knight starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris and Ralph Ineson in their lead roles. It’s basically a fantasy adventure film that performed slightly above expectations by collecting over $6.5 million.
