Eternity Review: Elizabeth Olsen, Callum Turner & Miles Teller Shine In A Smart, Charming Drama
Eternity had its first public screening at TIFF 2025 on September 7. After gaining momentum at the festival, the film is slated to hit theatres on November 26, 2025. It stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Olga Merediz, John Early, Callum Turner, Elizabeth Olsen, and Miles Teller.
Who knew that a love triangle could trail you past death itself? Though tangled and perplexing for its characters, it remains a perfect formula for a screwball romp. With sharp imagination, quirky charm, and a magnetic cast, this film embraces the setup flawlessly. Lucky for us, it works.
A significant portion of the narrative undergoes inside the Junction which seems to be a plain but comically brutalist hotel and convention space where the dead explore an expo-like marketplace of afterlife choices.
You’re first met by an afterlife coordinator who lays out the rules. Options are abundant and oddly specific, from Paris Land and Studio 54 World to Mountain Town and Weimar World.
Originating from Patrick Cunnane’s screenplay and later refined with director David Freyne, the film displays its influences with cheerful kitsch. Among them, Albert Brooks’ Defending Your Life looms especially large.
It all happens when Larry and Joan are introduced while driving to a family party, lightly quarreling over their next getaway destination: the beach or the mountains. They look tired of each other, bound not by choice but by a lifetime of shared existence. Joan is dying of cancer, and Larry is prepared to be her caretaker. Instead, he becomes the one to die first.
With Larry’s holdover week nearly ending, Joan finally reaches the Junction. Her assigned coordinator, Ryan, informs her that he has been expecting her for many years.
It’s Joan who finally comes out and finds that Ryan is Luke’s AC too, and that Luke has been lingering in limbo all this time just to be reunited with her. It’s romance taken to its highest extreme. Her restored youth makes the reunion even more emotional as she gazes at her dashing first love, while Larry stands nearby, bewildered.
It then calls to mind the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode where Larry decides he’d prefer afterlife independence. Teller’s Larry, however, always assumed Joan would remain by his side in eternity.
Elizabeth Olsen evokes a mid-century Diane Keaton with all the charm, wit, and soulful maturity beneath a young exterior. She and Larry share a riotous moment, collapsing into laughter as they delight in being able to squat and jump again with ease.
It all happens at the time when Teller seems to excel grounding the role with an ease. Luke may lack some depth, likely because he’s still the young war casualty he once was.
Turner, however, brings a committed, Redford-inspired Benjamin Braddock charm to the screen. And despite brushing off admiration and calling himself “not perfect,” he remains blissfully unaware that Joan could choose another path.
The narrative grapples with that stubborn choice. Is it romantic or bleak? Does it reduce the vastness of human experience? A little of everything.
Yet the film’s focused charm and gentle cleverness make it gratifying with a self-contained, audience-friendly ride that knows better than to overstay its welcome.
“Eternity,” releasing in theaters this Wednesday from A24, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association due to “sexual content and some strong language.” The film is 112 minutes long and is awarded 3.5 stars out of four.
