Arianna initiated the conversation by reexamining the traditional concept of success, suggesting a fresh viewpoint. “While we often hear ‘onward and upward,’ I prefer to say ‘onward, upward, and inward.’
By turning our focus inward, the journey becomes not only easier but also more effective. For me, the most critical frontier is not outer space; it’s our inner space,” she remarked.
In her discussion with Deepika, Arianna addressed five essential habits—sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and connections—that are vital for overall health and well-being.
This is how she made her point, “We have long emphasized our external achievements and pushed ourselves to extremes, overlooking the crucial need for self-care. The truth is, when we focus on our well-being, everything else tends to fall into place.
In the discussion, Arianna opened up about her own battle with burnout, recounting how she collapsed from fatigue while developing The Huffington Post. “I believed that sacrificing my health was necessary for success,” she shared. This moment served as a pivotal realization, prompting her to conclude that our common understanding of success should incorporate not just wealth and influence, but also the importance of health and joy.
Reflecting on her growth and the evolution of her definition of success, Arianna stated, “I advocate for including what I refer to as the ‘third metric of success,’ which encompasses our health and well-being, our ability to connect with our intuition and wisdom, our capacity to marvel at life’s mysteries, and our dedication to giving back. These elements together define a truly fulfilling and complete life.”
Deepika acknowledged the rising awareness of mental health issues since the pandemic but pointed out the enduring cultural barriers. “While some changes are occurring, there’s still a widespread belief that needing personal time or taking a weekend off reflects a lack of ambition or drive.
We often commend those who push themselves late into the night, viewing them as dedicated and hardworking. From my experience as an athlete, I know that rest and recovery are crucial for improving performance and being more effective,” the actress emphasized.
Arianna and Deepika also talked about effective ways to handle stress and promote well-being in daily life. One tool that Arianna introduced through Thrive Global is the “Thrive Reset.” This approach is based on neuroscience, which shows that we can recover from stress in just 60 to 90 seconds.
Each Reset includes a breathing exercise that guides users through deep inhalation and exhalation, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system and reducing cortisol levels.
“In only 60 seconds, conscious breathing can help us transition from stress to calm. It’s an important reminder that we don’t need hours to reset; brief moments of mindfulness can suffice throughout the day,” Arianna further emphasized.
