Bhumi Pednekar Expresses Hope that “Bhakshak” Will Raise More Awareness About Child Abuse

In the impactful second feature film “Bhakshak” by director Pulkit, set to stream on Netflix from February 9, Bhumi Pednekar embodies the character of a television journalist based in Patna. She exposes a child-abuse racket within a shelter home in Bihar.

Discussing her impactful performance in “Bhakshak,” Bhumi expressed, “This, along with Sonchiriya, is probably my best work. I strive to deliver my best, considering the limitations in our cinema where robust roles for women are seldom written. When director Pulkit, who co-wrote the script with his wife, approached me for Bhakshak, I was genuinely taken aback.”

Bhumi was already aware of the actual incident that occurred in the town of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. She shared, “I had previously read about the widespread abuse of underage girls in Bihar. However, after joining Bhakshak, I delved deeper into the details available in the public domain. The extent of it was horrifying beyond words. Unfortunately, such incidents persist, as evidenced by a recent occurrence in Thane. We hope that Bhakshak will contribute to raising public awareness about child abuse.”

The actress, known for her commitment to quality cinema over the last five years, speaks highly of her director. “I find joy in working with emerging directors who bring enthusiasm, passion, and dedication to the table. Pulkit’s approach to filming ‘Bhakshak,’ along with the exceptional production design and technical finesse, is truly awe-inspiring.”

Bhumi disclosed that several real-life names had to be altered for legal reasons. “Regrettably, we had to modify some of the location names and the identities of real individuals. The site where the heinous crime occurs in a shelter home is referred to as Munnawarpur. Interestingly, the film wasn’t shot in Patna or Bihar; we primarily filmed it in Lucknow,” she revealed.
