Amruta Subhash expressed her shock at the candid and honest remarks Naseeruddin Shah made about her work
After a performance that earned her audience applause, Amruta Subhash looked forward to hearing praise from Naseeruddin Shah. But as she told The Lallantop, what she got instead was a serious scolding and a note of concern from the veteran actor.
Amruta went on to describe how a crying scene in her performance typically won audience applause.
On one occasion, seeing Naseeruddin Shah in the audience, she intentionally delivered that part with intensity and felt proud of the reaction. Surprisingly, Naseer saab also watched the second show of the play.
Recalling the moment, Amruta said she met Shah at a tea shop after the show. “He looked at me and said, ‘Amruta…’ I replied, ‘Yes sir.’ He told me, ‘I watched your play.’ I felt proud and was waiting for praise. But then he said, ‘Beta, I’m concerned.’ I was shocked—why was he worried when the audience loved it?”
He pointed out, “You’re overpowering the character instead of becoming one with it”
Naseer saab told me, ‘Beta, I watched both performances and you did the exact same thing just for claps.’ He was furious and said loudly, ‘I’d prefer you failing at something new than clinging to applause through repetition.’
I was stunned and said, ‘Okay, sir, sorry.’ He asked me if the crying scene was even necessary. He said I was pushing myself onto the character instead of discovering its depth. ‘You’ll become predictable,’ he warned. ‘Your career might end.’ That moment shook me deeply.
Amruta Subhash, a recipient of the National Award, has featured in films like Dhamaka, Gully Boy, Raman Raghav 2.0, Contract, Vihir, and Killa. Most recently, she appeared in Chidiya, a film starring Svar Kamble and Vinay Pathak, directed by Mehran Amrohi, which released on May 30.
