With her Tamil interpretation of “Thug Life,” Chinmayi reached YouTube’s number one trending position, receiving acclaim for her voice
After years of silence in Tamil cinema, Chinmayi stunned audiences by performing “Muththa Mazhai” at the Thug Life audio launch. The AR Rahman track quickly trended, and her fans flooded social media with love.
Despite being blacklisted in the Tamil industry, her performance led to the track’s release online. Chinmayi recently spoke with News18 about how she dealt with the overwhelming response.
What Chinmayi said
Asked about the praise for her Muththa Mazhai performance, Chinmayi explained, “It wasn’t unexpected. Even Dhee had a similar experience before.
I had already recorded the Telugu and Hindi versions, so the Tamil one didn’t require much prep. I knew the tune and just read the lyrics. I treated it like any other job.”
I did what I was assigned to do
“A lot of people are shocked to learn I sang songs they’ve adored for years,” Chinmayi shared. “It’s a pleasant surprise. I never planned it that way that I simply followed where each song’s vibe and composition led me.
If a different tone or performance was needed, I adapted. I’m glad I could do justice to what was asked. That probably explains why they didn’t associate those songs with me.”
Chinmayi faced removal from SICTADAU after she accused Vairamuthu of abuse and defended women who named dubbing union president Radha Ravi. She’s been legally battling this issue for the past six years.
