The Story Behind Rakhee’s Acting Comeback After Allegedly Being Slapped by Husband Gulzar

It all happened on May 15, 1973, when celebrated writer and lyricist Gulzar tied his nuptial knot with Bollywood actress Rakhee. Their daughter, Meghna Gulzar, has since become one of the most respected directors in the industry.

After their marriage, Gulzar discouraged his wife from pursuing a career in films, leading the Bemisal actress to retire from the industry. However, an unfortunate event with her husband prompted her to make a comeback to acting and eventually resulted in their separation.

When A Troubling Incident Determined The Fate Of Rakhee And Gulzar’s Marriage

As per Bollywood Shaadi, it all happened in 1975 at the time of shooting for the film titled Aandhi, the cast was partying in Kashmir.

When Suchitra Sen, the film’s lead actress, became slightly drunk and was heading to her room, her co-star Sanjeev Kumar allegedly grabbed her. Gulzar then intervened, stepping in to protect her.

Feeling troubled by the incident, Suchitra Sen headed to her room, followed by Gulzar. Reports suggest they spent close to two hours together inside. Rakhee, upset by the situation, confronted her husband when he exited. This led to a heated argument, and it is alleged that Gulzar slapped her.

Following the incident, Rakhee decided to return to acting in films

The incident left a deep scar on their relationship. Rakhee, going against Gulzar’s wishes, decided to resume her acting career and took on a role in Kabhie Kabhie by Yash Chopra. This move created further conflict, ultimately leading to the couple’s separation.

Even though Rakhee and Gulzar lived apart, they opted not to divorce, understanding the negative impact it might have on their daughter Meghna. Today, they maintain a cordial relationship, founded on mutual respect and understanding.
