The Color Purple Box Office (USA): During its opening weekend, Steven Spielberg’s version accumulated $1.7 million, ultimately grossing $94 million throughout its run at the US domestic box office.

The Color Purple surprised the box office scene during the Christmas season, marking the best Christmas day opening since 2009 and claiming the second-highest opening ever in the US domestic box office.

Despite falling short of surpassing the $24.6 million record set by 2009’s Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr., Blitz Bazawule’s directorial venture has outperformed all other Christmas releases.

Featuring artists such as Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo, Blitz Bazawule’s adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 classic, The Color Purple, revisits Alice Walker’s acclaimed 1982 novel.

The Color Purple made a remarkable opening day debut, amassing an impressive $18.5 million at the US domestic box office, outstripping the earnings of 2012’s Les Misérables (starring Hugh Jackman), which earned $18.1 million on its opening day.

Here is the ranking of the top Christmas box office openers at the US Domestic Box Office:

  • Sherlock Holmes (2009) — $24.6 million
  • The Color Purple (2023) — $18.15 million
  • Les Misérables (2012) — $18.1 million
  • Daddy’s Home (2015) — $15.7 million
  • Unbroken (2014) — $15.4 million
  • Into the Woods (2014) — $15.08 million
  • Django Unchained (2012) — $15.01 million
  • Marley and Me (2008) — $14.3 million

It’s quite remarkable that when comparing the 2023 film, The Color Purple’s opening day, to the 1985 film’s entire opening weekend, there’s a difference of over ten times in earnings.

For context, Steven Spielberg’s version garnered $1.7 million during its opening weekend and achieved $94 million in its US domestic box office lifetime.

Regarding the films, our internal reviewer, Mark McPherson, expressed in his review of The Color Purple, “It presents a gratifying musical by intertwining a profound historical drama with fitting musical numbers.

While the songs might not be extraordinary, the performances and extravagant production design offer reason enough to engage with and appreciate the lively energy it exudes.”
