As per an interaction with Hindustan Times, Hollywood actor Ted Raimi opens up about his admiration for Indian cinema and much more
Ted Raimi, the Hollywood star, has a deep appreciation for Indian cinema, especially the Singham franchise led by Ajay Devgn. He’s particularly drawn to India’s action-packed films that effortlessly combine music, dance, and a wide emotional range.
In his view, Indian filmmakers have achieved a level of mastery in action storytelling that others around the world are still striving to reach.
Speaking to the news portal, Ted Raimi, whose recent film Failure was featured at the second Red Lorry Film Festival organized by BookMySho, shared his thoughts on Indian cinema and much more.
On His Love for Indian Films
Although Ted has yet to set foot in India, his admiration for Indian cinema keeps growing, inspiring him to explore the colorful and dynamic world of Bollywood.
“I’ve never been to India, though I’ve always wanted to visit,” he shares. “The few Indian films that make their way to the U.S.—I watch them eagerly. I especially enjoy the action-packed ones. Without a doubt, I think you create some of the greatest action films ever made.”
When asked if he has a favourite Bollywood director, Ted admits he has but can’t recall the name.
“I don’t want to mispronounce it so badly that you don’t understand. I saw it a couple of years ago. It is probably my favourite Indian action movie,” he shares, adding, “I should have written it down”.
He recalls catching the film on the big screen, describing it as, “a super cop who goes after criminals. He’s got a strong sense of justice, loves his family, and there’s a romantic angle too.”
When asked if it was Ajay Devgn’s Singham he was referring to, Ted’s expression instantly brightened. “Yes, that’s the one! I’m a huge fan of Singham and its sequel,” he said with genuine excitement.
Ted Raimi’s View On Indian Action Films
Ted expressed his admiration for Indian action films, saying, “I really enjoy watching Indian cinema. The films are outstanding. What makes your action movies so special is the way they blend music, dance, comedy, and action, it’s something truly distinctive on a global level.”
He added, “Whenever others try to recreate that style, it just doesn’t land to have completely miss the mark.
Your industry and culture are uniquely equipped to deliver that kind of storytelling better than anyone,” said the actor, recognized for roles in superhit films like Supernatural, Candyman, the Spider-Man series, Evil Dead II, and The Evil Dead.
Ted Raimi’s View On His Career In Hollywood
Ted’s latest appearance was in Failure, a film uniquely shot in a single continuous 87-minute take.
The story centres on James, a powerful businessman (played by Ted), who finds himself racing against time to clear a massive bank debt, and confronted with a harrowing choice between financial ruin and committing murder.
At 59, the actor laments that the newer generation of performers is steering away from theatre — a trend he feels is taking a toll on their artistic growth.
“Performers like me are becoming increasingly rare,” he says. “These days, most actors don’t come from a theatre background, and that’s really unfortunate.
Theatre teaches you how to engage with an audience in the moment. Modern actors are missing out on that experience.
That’s not to say today’s actors aren’t talented many are, but they’re skipping a part of the craft that could significantly enhance their skills,” he concludes.
