Coolie Hindi Movie Review
Coolie happens to be the latest from Lokesh Kanagaraj which is getting all the praise from the audience ever since its release.
Many expected it to expand the Lokesh Kanagaraj Universe, yet it emerges as a standalone piece. The film is a heartfelt celebration of one of Indian cinema’s most illustrious superstars.
Coolie Movie Review: A Closer Examination of the Script
One thing that you would agree about superstar Rajinikanth is that his ability to turn movies into sort of events. While watching his films, you simply don’t have to go in with a checklist of logic. Instead you go in for the spectacle, the style, along with the superstar magic.
Coolie: The Powerhouse basically taps into that very spirit, delivering the kind of entertainment its audience expects and loves.
Narrated in a non-linear style, Coolie introduces Deva (Rajinikanth). He’s a man who once worked as a coolie but left behind his old vices to run the Deva Mansion.
In contrast, Simon (Nagarjuna) stands as the feared boss of a massive illegal operation. His remorseless lieutenant, Dayal (Soubin Saahir), is tasked with a single, high-stakes objective which is to identify the police informant hidden within a vast pool of laborers.
The tension is laid out brilliantly as the film opens. It’s after that Dayal decisively handles the situation, executing the informant with cold precision. But one question haunts the story, is there more than one? The next 2.5 hours are spent chasing that answer.
The film later shows Deva’s personal life which crumbles when tragedy comes along his way in the form of his best friend, Rajashekar (Sathyaraj). His three daughters despise Deva, tied together by a shared reason.
Convinced it was a murder, Deva promises to take revenge. Joining him, albeit reluctantly, is Preeti (Shruti Haasan), his friend’s daughter, leading to an emotional tale of friendship, vengeance, and unbreakable bonds.
Coolie Review: Stellar Performances That Drive the Film
For many, the crowning moment of Coolie is seeing Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth, and Upendra together in one frame. Though Nagarjuna’s presence would have made it iconic, it remains a highlight.
Even with one of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s least impactful scripts, Coolie succeeds because Rajinikanth carries it effortlessly with his charisma, commanding every moment on screen.
In Coolie, Rajinikanth’s dialogues fueled the audience by showcasing his unmatched charm and wide-reaching appeal.
With Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and Nagarjuna lending sturdy support, the film never loses its grip despite a script full of leaks. The winning factor in the film happens to be the exceptional cast.
Coolie Review: How the Direction and Music Elevate the Film
While Coolie reflects the making of the film in Lokesh Kanagaraj style, it has its own flat moments. But Rajinikanth’s brilliance on screen simply uplifts the film, making you overlook its weaker parts. At its core, the story follows Deva’s vengeance-driven journey for Rajashekar’s death, uncovering backstories that also hold the key to understanding Deva’s own demise.
The climax of Coolie changesits gears with a surprising twist, connecting the dots regarding the title. Interestingly, the very reason behind the name Coolie is kept under wraps for most of the movie, fueling curiosity among the audience. The only drawback is that the second half looks stretched, as prolonged chase scenes and action sequences take over the narrative.
The film has another disturbing element which I don’t find appropriate for the audience. It indulges heavily in blood and violence. Every violent act, every splash of blood across the screen, was greeted with cheers and whistles, as though it were art. Perhaps I sound old-fashioned, but this normalizing of gore troubles me. What’s worse is realizing that even I have begun to appreciate the cinematic artistry of this blood-soaked genre.
One more key contributor to Coolie’s success is none other than Anirudh. His music acts like a spell, pulling you into Lokesh Kanagaraj’s world with irresistible energy. The background score pumps life into the narrative, while the foot-tapping hooks make the film an audio-visual celebration. His touch adds an extra sparkle to the movie.
Coolie Movie Review: The Final Verdict
If you want unfiltered masala entertainment, Coolie is the film to watch. Rajinikanth fans will relish every frame, but even non-fans will find it engaging. It is an entertainer in its truest sense, filled with spice, drama, and action.
While the script defies conventional storytelling structures, Rajinikanth’s sheer star power makes those breaks irrelevant. His charisma once again proves why no one does mass cinema better.
