Vijayakanth, the leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party based in Tamil Nadu, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 71.
His death followed a COVID-19 diagnosis, with reports indicating he faced breathing difficulties, as mentioned by the DMDK on their social media platform.
Scheduled for tomorrow evening, his final rites will take place at the party’s headquarters in Chennai.
Founding the DMDK in 2005, Vijayakanth emerged as the sole successful candidate in the 2006 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly election. Despite a significant showing in the 2009 Lok Sabha election in Tamil Nadu, winning 10% of the vote, the party experienced a decline in the early 2010s.

Following news of his passing, regional and national leaders expressed condolences. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin referred to Vijayakanth’s demise as a loss to both Tamil Nadu and the film industry. He announced full state honors for Vijayakanth’s last rites.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned Vijayakanth’s death, acknowledging his significant impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and highlighting his dedication to public service.
Vijayakanth had been hospitalized last month requiring pulmonary support, as reported by The Hindu, before being discharged two weeks ago. His final public appearance occurred on December 14, coinciding with his wife’s election as the DMDK’s general secretary.
