Robert Downey Jr. makes his Broadway debut in Ayad Akhtar’s play McNeal, which kicked off with a celebrity-filled opening night attended by Jason Bateman, Matt Damon, and Steven Spielberg. The show, directed by Bartlett Sher, will be performed at Lincoln Center Theater until November 24.
The Broadway opening night for McNeal was a star-studded affair, with many of Robert Downey Jr.’s celebrity friends supporting him.
The Oscar-winning actor took the stage in this new play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar.
It all happened on September 30, when Robert was joined on the red carpet by his wife, Susan Downey.
Stars Like Steven Spielberg, Jason Bateman Attend Robert Downey Jr.’s Broadway Premiere of McNeal
Just before the show began, Justin Theroux, Will Arnett, Paul Rudd, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, posed for photos together.
The star-studded gathering also included Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw, Oscar Isaac and Elvira Lind, Matthew Rhys, F. Murray Abraham, and Nicole Brydon Bloom, who is engaged to Justin.
Joining Robert’s co-stars on the red carpet were Saisha Talwar, Brittany Bellizeare, Rafi Gavron, Melora Hardin, along with Ruthie Ann Miles and Tony winners Andrea Martin.
In McNeal, Robert Downey Jr. plays Jacob McNeal, a distinguished writer often considered one of the best in history, and a frequent contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
McNeal also struggles with an obsession with artificial intelligence, a fractured relationship with his son, a forthcoming novel, and unresolved conflicts from his past.
McNeal, directed by Bartlett Sher and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar, is currently showing at Lincoln Center Theater until November 24. Be sure to grab your tickets while they last.
