In Short:
- Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man Set Will Exclude Commander Precon Decks, Focusing on Standard-Legal Cards
- During the latest investor call, Hasbro’s CEO confirmed this surprising choice
- Marvel precons will be delayed for a bit longer
The upcoming Spider-Man crossover in Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond series will forgo one of the most popular product formats when it launches later this year.
In a surprising turn, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks announced that the upcoming Spider-Man set will not include the typical Commander preconstructed decks, opting instead to focus on Standard-legal cards.
In the latest Hasbro Investors call, CEO Chris Cocks discussed the upcoming Universes Beyond sets for 2025, including the Final Fantasy and Spider-Man collaborations.
The ready-made decks designed for the Commander format in Magic: The Gathering. They typically include both non-Standard-legal cards and exclusive cards crafted specifically for Commander play, often reflecting the theme of the larger set.
Though individual Commander products existed prior, preconstructed Commander decks have been a staple of MTG releases since Zendikar Rising in 2020.
“Well, I Guess I’m Something of a Standard Player Myself”
The last Standard-legal set to skip Commander precons was Foundations, released last year, which offered a mix of exclusive products. Likewise, Assassin’s Creed was the only other Universes Beyond set to forgo these preconstructed decks, though it still included numerous cards designed with Commander in mind.
Looking at the the strong demand for precon decks, it’s surprising that the Spider-man set will not feature any.
Well, this could point to the set being more limited in scale compared to previous releases like Final Fantasy or Tarkir: Dragonstorm, which offered four and five precon decks, respectively.
Interestingly, Spider-man is the least revealed set so far this year. At MagicCon Chicago this month, we got extensive previews of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Final Fantasy, and Edge of Eternities, along with a reveal of the Avatar.
Even though, it simply showcased the Last Airbender set but there was no word on Spider-man, which is set to launch in the middle of these. This only adds to the uncertainty about what exactly Spider-man will be when it finally makes its debut.
The hope for Commander precons featuring Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Gwen is no longer a reality. The Spider-man set is set to release this summer.
