Rainn Wilson acknowledged on a podcast that maintaining momentum on The Office became especially difficult once Steve Carell left the series

Rainn Wilson, the actor behind Dwight Schrute on The Office, recently appeared on the Good Guys podcast where he discussed the fallout from Steve Carell’s departure in 2011.

Speaking with hosts Josh Peck and Ben Soffer, the 59-year-old recalled how the show’s tone and team dynamics changed dramatically after Carell left.

Speaking about the shift in The Office following Steve Carell’s exit, Rainn Wilson shared on the podcast, “There was a lot of chaos. We were unsure about the tone, the leadership, and how to tell stories without Michael Scott, who was the driving comedic force. Losing Steve, one of America’s greatest comic actors, was tough.”

Though it was a challenge to fill Steve Carell’s shoes on The Office, Rainn Wilson wasn’t surprised when his co-star left. “We expected it,” he admitted, pointing to Carell’s Hollywood success in films such as Get Smart.

After parting ways with the sitcom, Carell enjoyed a strong film run with hits like Crazy, Stupid, Love and Despicable Me. Despite never winning, his six Emmy nominations for Michael Scott reflect the impact of his performance.

Although Steve departed earlier, the show lasted two additional seasons and concluded in 2013, marked by his surprise reappearance in the finale.
