In Short:

  • NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has officially banned the popular third-party plug-in Blitz from being used in future matches
  • NetEase, in an online announcement, classified Blitz as “cheating software” and stated that the information it provides is considered “confidential”
  • Players who previously used Blitz won’t be penalized, but any future or continued use will lead to consequences

NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, hasn’t had the best week. On Tuesday, it was reported that several U.S.-based developers were laid off, with the company citing the need to “optimize development efficiency.”

Reports later suggested that the game was nearly scrapped due to NetEase’s hesitation to cover the cost of the Marvel licensing.

As per thegamers, if that weren’t enough, later that same day, reports emerged that NetEase is looking to sell its non-Chinese studios, including notable names like Quantic Dream and Suda51’s Grasshopper Manufacture, among others.

Now, amid all this, NetEase still managed to announce on Friday that the popular third-party plug-in Blitz will be banned from all the upcoming events.

It’s Being Labeled As “Cheating Software”

Blitz is a plug-in designed to provide enhanced data for online multiplayer games like Apex Legends, League of Legends, and Fortnite.

As stated on its website, it has amassed over 240 million users and tracked more than two billion matches.

For Marvel Rivals, Blitz features a real-time leaderboard that tracks in-game stats like damage, heals, kills, and assists. It also provides a health tracker to signal when healing is needed and an energy tracker to assist with ultimate coordination.

NetEase considers this data to be “confidential information” and believes it “severely undermines the fairness of our game.” As a result, the plug-in is now prohibited.

Now that the ban is in effect, NetEase has confirmed that players won’t face penalties for previous use of the plug-in, provided they don’t use it again in the future.

“Our goal is to maintain fairness in our gaming world and safeguard the integrity of your account,” the announcement stated. “We strongly encourage players to avoid using any third-party plug-ins so we can create a thriving and heroic gaming community together.”

Blitz has stated that it is “temporarily” halting its Marvel Rivals overlays while exploring ways to “come back stronger.” Whether it finds a workaround remains to be seen—just as the first player to be banned under these new rules has yet to emerge.
