With Colman Domingo stepping into a directing role for Scandalous!, Kim Novak has expressed discomfort about the film. It portrays her relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. from decades ago.

Novak revealed she wouldn’t have agreed to the project, particularly with Sydney Sweeney cast as her. She believes the actress’s look and overall presence don’t match her own identity.

Expressing her concerns, Kim Novak said the film could end up focusing too much on sensual aspects rather than the meaningful bond she had with Sammy Davis Jr., played by David Jonsson.

In her remarks to The Times, she suggested that Sydney Sweeney’s strong screen presence might influence that portrayal, and she feels the role was miscast.

From Hidden Affair to Public Chaos- The Drama That Changed Everything

Kim Novak reflected on acting while offering advice to Sydney Sweeney, stating that vulnerability comes naturally rather than being learned.

She highlighted that emotional depth, especially when it swings between highs and lows, can further strengthen a performance. Novak, who went public with her bipolar diagnosis in 2013, described these emotions as powerful and all-consuming.

In a conversation with Deadline, Colman Domingo referred to Scandalous! as a “fractured love story” and noted that shooting is expected to start in summer 2025. The timeline follows the completion of Season 3 of Euphoria by him and Sydney Sweeney, which will debut April 12 on HBO.

According to Colman Domingo, the goal is just to create a warm and emotional film about love that exists under constant public attention. “It’s about trying to live privately, to love freely, and to have a life of your own,” he explained. “That’s something Sydney Sweeney and I both understand. It’s about protecting your humanity.”

At the height of their fame, Kim Novak, best known for Vertigo, and Sammy Davis Jr., a prominent member of the Rat Pack, first crossed paths while appearing on The Steve Allen Show in 1956.

Their connection quickly grew intense, but as whispers about their relationship spread, the deeply rooted racial prejudice of the time put their careers at serious risk.

At the time, Kim Novak faced criticism from Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, where she was under contract. News of her discreet relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. broke in early 1958 when a Chicago gossip writer published a detailed report, even mentioning alleged wedding plans, claims both stars denied. Just nine days later, Davis married Loray White.
