In Short:

  • Koei Tecmo’s long-standing Dynasty Warriors series has found major success with Origins
  • Players found the incessant dialogue from mumbling NPCs to be frustrating
  • Thanks to a new patch where players can completely mute NPCs, allowing for a more peaceful gameplay experience

Dynasty Warriors: Origins debuted last month, marking a strong start for the year in gaming. It swiftly became the series’ top-rated entry and reached its highest player count ever.

However, the most probable issue—NPCs were overly chatty. With Patch 1.0003, Koei Tecmo now allows players to silence them completely. According to the patch notes, players can either reduce the frequency of overworld rumors or mute them entirely.

One player on the Dynasty Warriors subreddit exclaimed, “Thank God I can finally silence the **** NPCs in the overworld!” Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time a game has introduced a patch to mute irritating dialogue.

Enough with the Chatter, Please

When God of War Ragnarök launched on PC last year, it included a “Reduced Puzzle Hints” option that allowed players to silence Atreus and Freya. Originally marketed as a PC-exclusive feature, it eventually became available on consoles as well.

It all happened when Horizon Forbidden West received an update to lessen Aloy’s constant stash reminders, a change Guerrilla acknowledged in the patch notes. Likewise, Super Mario Bros. Wonder allowed players to silence the talking flowers right from launch.

Notably, the flower in Super Mario Bros. Wonder will react if you choose to mute it. While these updates offer a helpful solution, a better approach might be to design companions that aren’t overly chatty in the first place.
