Neeraj Panday’s romantic thriller Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, is projected to open poorly at the box office. Similarly, Janhvi Kapoor’s Ulajh, releasing on the same day, is also expected to underperform.
Both films hit theaters this Friday, just two weeks before Stree 2 and a week after the blockbuster success of Deadpool & Wolverine.
Bollywood Hungama has submitted a report that says Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha managed to sell under 1,000 tickets across three leading theater chains just a day before its release.
The film was initially set to open a week after the record-breaking Kalki 2898 AD but was rescheduled to avoid direct competition. This weak pre-release performance could potentially shake up the industry, which has already been hit by several high-profile failures this year.
Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is underperforming even compared to Sarfira, which marked Akshay Kumar’s weakest box office debut in around 15 years, earning only about Rs 20 crore throughout its run.
While Akshay has faced challenges recently, Ajay Devgn and Tabu have enjoyed successful releases this year. Ajay starred in the blockbuster Shaitaan, and Tabu appeared in Crew. They have also seen notable success with Drishyam 2 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in recent years.
Janhvi Kapoor’s box office performance has been inconsistent since her sole success in 2018. Her recent films, Mili and Mr & Mrs Mahi, struggled in theaters. Ahead of its release, Ulajh has only sold approximately 750 tickets nationwide.
At an average ticket price of Rs 250, this translates to less than Rs 2 lakh—an amount a leading Bollywood makeup artist can earn in just two days.
Janhvi Kapoor is looking forward to have a major hit with her upcoming South Indian film, Devara, starring Jr NTR. Other than that Ulajh also stars Roshan Mathew and Gulshan Devaiah in their respective pivotal roles.
