Karan Johar’s Hilarious Throwback: “I Told the Baker It Was My Birthday, Four Times a Year!”

He talked about a scene in a fil titled Dil Dhadakne Do which was directed by Dil Dhadakne Do. The scene revolved around Shefali (Shah) who’s deeply wounded and then she decides to eat her cake.

After Karan watched this scene, he had tears in his eyes mainly because of a lady called Azra Gorewala. This lady made that chocolate cake by baking it out of breech candy. Karan shared.

Karan Johar continued with his nostalgic smile and shared,”I used to call her and say, Aunty, it’s my birthday and I just like to get that cake. I will send somebody to collect that cake.”

“Was it your birthday? “No, never! That one year, she even called my mom and said, ‘Mrs. Johar, I just wanted to let you know—your son has ordered four chocolate cakes this year, each time saying it’s his birthday!’”

Reflecting on his mother’s reaction, Karan remarked, “My mother reprimanded me at the time, of course. Still, I can clearly recall opening that brown box and admiring the exquisite icing. Those familiar with South Bombay will understand exactly what I mean.”

He smiled as he reminisced: “She would make this soft, black chocolate cake with the most beautiful, colorful icing. I’d sit there, spoon in hand, and eat it all — it filled me with such innocent happiness in those days.”

A scene from Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) that starred Anushka Sharma, Shefali Shah, Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, evoked the memory. The acclaimed family drama explored the intricacies of relationships and emotions aboard a luxury cruise ship.
