Though Ajith Kumar is considered one of the most prominent stars of his generation, he doesn’t place much importance on his superstardom.
In a recent conversation, following the honour of receiving the Padma Bhushan, he opened up about his life beyond the silver screen.

Honoured with the Padma Bhushan earlier this week in Delhi, Ajith Kumar later spoke to India Today about the future of his film career. He said, “You never know! I might not plan retirement.
I could be pushed into it. Life itself is a blessing, and I don’t take that lightly. This isn’t just philosophy, I’ve had surgeries, I’ve been injured, and I’ve witnessed people close to me survive cancer. Those experiences change you. They make you want to cherish every second of life.”
Ajith Kumar spoke candidly about how his acting career began unexpectedly. “I’m an accidental actor,” said the 54-year-old. “I had no plans to enter films.
I worked at an automobile company for six months after school and was racing bikes at 18. Then came print and TV ads, it all just happened.”

A major star in Tamil cinema for nearly 20 years, Ajith Kumar made his comeback in 2025 following a two-year break. His return film, Vidaamuyarchi, was well-received by critics but earned a modest ₹138 crore. However, his most recent film, Good Bad Ugly, has seen much greater commercial success, crossing ₹200 crore within just two weeks.
The actor shared that he earned his first roles by auditioning and was committed to giving his best. Ajith also spoke about how he worked hard on refining his accent in the early stages of his career, after being called out for having a strong anglicised tone.
Ajith’s acting debut came with the 1990 Tamil film En Veedu En Kanavar, and his first leading role was in the Telugu film Prema Pusthakam. His recent release, Good Bad Ugly, has performed well commercially.
