Manoj Bajpayee Criticizes OTT Platforms for Stifling Independent Cinema: “They No Longer Embrace Such Creativity”

Manoj Bajpayee, celebrated for his unique roles and collaborations with budding filmmakers, opened up about the factors driving his career path. Reflecting on a turning point, he shared, “During Gangs of Wasseypur, I understood that the industry wasn’t going to offer me the opportunities I desired. The scripts I craved weren’t being written, and deserving talent was overlooked. That’s when I realized I had to seek out my own directors and stories rather than endlessly waiting for the right project. I was in a state of urgency!”

Manoj Bajpayee spoke about how this realization led him to actively search for fresh talent. “I began watching countless short films on YouTube and discovered many skilled filmmakers. That’s how I ended up collaborating with new directors like Dipesh Jain (Gali Guleiyan) and Kanu Bahl (Despatch). I felt I had so much to convey, but the industry lacked people who could provide me with that platform,” he said.

Bajpayee voiced his worries about the difficulties independent cinema faces in India, particularly on digital platforms. He remarked, “We’re at our lowest point right now.

We once believed there was a solid platform for independent cinema, but now even OTT platforms have stopped embracing that level of creativity.” He continued, “We’re in an era of uncertainty. But one day, independent cinema will rise again. It’s the only form of cinema that truly upholds the essence of cinema as an art.”

After his recent appearance in Bhaiyya Ji, Bajpayee is now preparing for the debut of Kanu Bahl’s eagerly awaited film Despatch, which will have its premiere at IFFI 2024.
