Sooraj Barjatya Unveils His Filmmaking Philosophy: “No villains, Only Circumstances, & Exactly 14 Punches”

This is what Sooraj Barjatya shared, “My father (Rajkumar Barjatya) and grandfather believed a story needed a villain, but they preferred circumstances to take on that role, minimizing violence.

In Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), the bhabhi’s death acts as the circumstance. In Maine Pyar Kiya (1987), the wet money becomes the hurdle. In Uunchai (2022), the protagonists’ desire to climb a mountain is challenged by their age, which serves as the obstacle.”

Discussing the 14-punches rule, Sooraj remarked, “Action directors tend to keep adding more and more (laughs). They’ll say, ‘We’ll do this and that,’ and it never stops. So, we decided to set a limit: ‘The fight will only have 14 punches; that’s it!’”

This is what he explained further, “The concept was to ensure that families could watch our films together. That has always been our core. There were times when we strayed from these principles, but those projects didn’t work. The films that succeeded are the ones that adhered to values.

Sooraj Barjatya further discussed the journey of creating Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003) and how its underwhelming reception encouraged him to return to his core principles.
