In a recent interview, Scarlett Johansson shared insights on how Hollywood’s portrayal of women has shifted since she began her acting journey
Scarlett Johansson, who has delivered memorable performances in Avengers, Black Widow, and other successful films, recently told Variety that roles for women in Hollywood have seen significant change since her early days.
Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About Being Typecast in Attractive Roles
Reflecting on her early experiences in Hollywood, Scoop star Scarlett Johansson said she was often given roles centered around physical appeal and male-centric storylines.
She added that the industry is now changing, ushering in “a different time for young women,” according to the outlet.
Scarlett Johansson noted a cultural shift in Hollywood, saying, “There are more women in powerful roles, and I’ve been offered parts that aren’t limited by old stereotypes.” She contrasted this with the past:
“When I was younger, most of the roles were about being desirable or fitting into a male-driven plot. That kind of storytelling is becoming less frequent now.”
Scarlett Johansson Recalls Early Career Challenges with Hypersexualised Roles
The Black Widow star has addressed the issues of objectification in Hollywood before. In 2022, Scarlett Johansson shared that being hypersexualised as a young actor made her feel stuck.
“I was objectified and put in a box. I wasn’t being offered the kinds of roles I was passionate about,” she said. “I remember thinking, ‘People probably assume I’m 40.’ That image stopped serving me and became something I had to overcome,” she recalled.
