Patralekhaa Shares Her Experience Playing Savitribai Phule In Phule: “Letting Go of That Pressure Was A Relief”

In a recent interview, Patralekhaa opened up about how she prepared for her role, saying, “I definitely did my research on her—there’s a wealth of information about the Phules online.

But Ananth sir was very specific about one thing: he didn’t want me to learn Marathi, as he intended for the film to be entirely in Hindi.”

This is what added, “That choice actually came as a huge relief. Picking up a new language or accent can be tough, and it often pulls your attention away from your performance. You start overthinking your lines instead of responding organically. Not having to deal with that made the process much smoother.”

Patralekhaa shared that, like most actors, the team engaged in multiple script reading sessions, sitting down with the director and fellow cast members. “I did readings with Pratik and the rest of the crew,” she said. “But when it came to research, it was more of a personal journey.

Each of us approached it individually. Savitribai Phule is such an iconic figure in history, and her life’s work is so well-documented that we had an abundance of resources to dive into.”

Following all the praise she received for her performance in IC814, Patralekhaa is now gearing up for her next big release, Phule, where she stars opposite Pratik Gandhi.

The much-awaited film, hitting theatres on April 25, traces the remarkable lives of Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule, trailblazers in the movement for women’s education in India.
