Cautioning against the copycat trend, Karan Johar said he’s uninterested in creating a cinematic universe and wary of those trying to mirror the success of Stree 2 or Chhaava
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama , Karan Johar called out the industry’s growing habit of copying what works.
He described Bollywood’s current issue as ‘herd mentality,’ where creators rush to emulate successful films rather than focusing on originality, something he sees as a flawed approach.
Karan explained that the industry often rushes to mimic successful formulas. “Pushpa wins over the mass audience, and suddenly everyone wants to do the same. Chhaava scores, and period films are everywhere.
Stree clicks, and horror comedies are the new go-to. But what made them successful wasn’t the trend, it was that they offered something new and fresh.”
‘My Universe Is Cinema’
Highlighting the value of creative individuality, Karan said, “Everyone should focus on their own distinct vision.
When someone asked me if I had a cinematic universe, like a spy or cop series, I simply said, ‘Cinema is my universe.’ I’m here to tell compelling stories, not just build branded franchises. If a universe emerges organically, so be it.”
For the premiere of Homebound at the Cannes Film Festival, Karan Johar walked the red carpet in support of the Dharma Productions project directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Vishal Jethwa, and Ishaan Khatter.
