Sikandar, starring Salman Khan, underperformed significantly at the box office, drawing criticism across the country. AR Murugadoss, the director of the film, has now reacted for the first time about the negative response and what he believes may have caused the film’s downfall.
Speaking at an event for his upcoming movie Madharaasi, the filmmaker opened up about Sikandar’s failure, stating that his difficulty with Hindi contributed to the film’s downfall.
This is what AR Murugadoss has to say, “Filmmaking in our own language gives us a sense of control. We’re tuned into the culture and audience behavior.
Today, trends change in a flash and instantly connect with people. But when working in a different language, we often miss what younger audiences appreciate. Believing in the script is essential.”

Sikandar, released on March 30, 2025, marked Salman Khan’s comeback to the big screen after a break since 2023. Although it was his much-anticipated Eid release after two years, the film underwhelmed at the box office.
Sikandar faced criticism, yet it managed to achieve ₹100 crore in domestic collections and crossed ₹200 crore globally. Despite this, it was called a box office underperformer by Salman Khan’s usual metrics. Its release on Netflix in May was equally poorly received.
