Will Ranbir Kapoor Gain Acceptance As Rama In Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana Adaptation?
Even more pressing is the question of whether Ranbir will be embraced in the role of Rama Bhagwan in Nitesh Tiwari’s cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana, slated to commence shooting in April.
While politically correct gestures, such as attending the Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya and the decision to refrain from alcohol and cigarettes during filming, can contribute to Ranbir’s efforts, they may only take him so far in his pursuit of being accepted as Lord Rama.
Ranbir is the latest actor to portray Bhagwan Rama on screen. The first actor to imbue Lord Rama with a sense of reverence was Mahipal, whose portrayal in Babubhai Mistry’s blockbuster “Sampoorna Ramayan” defined the 1960s in a manner akin to how Arun Govil and his “Ramayana” shaped the 1980s.
Anita Guha, the actress who played Sita in “Sampoorna Ramayan,” reflected, “Mahipalji and I became synonymous with Rama and Sita until Arun Govil and Deepika assumed those roles. Everywhere we went, we were treated as if we were actual deities. It was essential for us to uphold the ideals projected in the film.”
Arun Govil, who assumed the role of Rama after Ramanand Sagar’s adaptation, looked back on this transformative phase in his life. “Even years after its initial telecast, people continue to shower me with their love and respect. It’s crucial to carefully assess what one loses and gains in life. If I missed out on a few roles, consider what I gained. I believe I’ve lost very little and gained a lot. Even before I portrayed Rama, I was never an outgoing party enthusiast. I grew up in an environment where the Ramayan was regularly recited. My parents would read the Ramayan, and we performed puja every morning and evening. So, no, I didn’t have to stretch myself to play Rama. The sense of reverence came naturally to me. I’m not excessively religious, but I do believe in God and in Rama,” he shared.
It’s up to Ranbir Kapoor to portray Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of the Ramayana, and it remains to be seen which approach he takes.
