It mainly triggered because of the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the campaign hinges on between “jeans” and “genes.” American Eagle has since released a statement, standing by the ad and calling it a celebration of personal confidence.
American Eagle Breaks Silence with Formal Response to Public Backlash
The core of controversy was created because of Sydney Sweeney’s line in the ad that says, “genes determine traits like hair and eye colour” followed by “my jeans are blue”.
Well, the above drawn criticism from fans who feel it, combined with her appearance, reflects eugenic ideals and echoes white nationalist aesthetics. Even as the outrage grows, American Eagle continues to stand by the campaign in a formal defense.
This is what they stated, “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans.” They went on to say, “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.”
