Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is better known as the cancer of the outer lining of the lungs called Pleura. To better understand the term, you need to go through the structure of a lung. But for now, all you need is to understand the term with a little consent.

Lung happens to be a large body organ which is protected by an outer thin elastic membrane known as Pleura. A number of complications arise when a person gets diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma, primarily caused by inhaling carcinogenic asbestos fibers.

It actually takes longer (20 years) to develop full blown disease after asbestos fibers continue to collect in the lungs (over years), making the disease to prevail. There are several kinds of mesothelioma, but this is the most common type seen in patients.

Primary Causes of Pleural Mesothelioma

The primary cause of this form of lung cancer is overexposure to deadly asbestos fibers. Earlier, there was little to no awareness about the ill hazards of asbestos fibers, but later when it started producing lethal effects among patients, its use was banned.

Asbestos and related products can be easily found in homes and areas when construction is in progress. There is another term known as “occupational asbestos exposure” comes into picture when the exposure happens in the home. If an over exposure of asbestos happens for long, it may lead to pleural mesothelioma.

In addition to the causes mentioned above, there are some genetic factors responsible for the onset of the disease.

It has been researched well in patients with a history of genetic makeup who are prone to be at a risk of developing the disease more than a normal patient. However, the exact relation has not been fully studied.

Steve McQueen, American Actor (1930-1980)

Steve McQueen is better regarded as ‘The King of Cool’. He recently enacted in the movie The Magnificent Seven, Sand Pebbles and Wanted- Dead or Alive.

He’s known for his memorable acting skills as an antihero in most of the films in his career.

He was a fine actor and was counted among the highest paid actors in early 1979s. He was a passionate biker and also had a keen interest in racing cars and motorcycles.

His exposure to asbestos started early in the US marine corps and during this time phase, he was diagnosed with Pleural mesothelioma.

He travelled to Mexico during his fight against the disease to search for any kind of alternative treatment. He finally died from a heart attack after a surgery.


Joe Sample, American Jazz Musician (1939-2014)

He worked with other legendary performers, including Miles Davis, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, Steely Dan and The Supremes.

Joe Sample was an American Jazz music composer who’s known to have founded The Crusaders from a band- bebop as early when he was in high school.

He always tried hard to combine his passion of Jazz music with distinct soul sound and blues.

During his days, he worked with some other performers of his time, including Eric Clapton, B. B. King, Jimmy Witherspoon and many more.


Sean Sasser, MTV Star Performer (1968-2013)

Sean Sasser was a world renowned MTV personality on a popular television show- The Real World- San Francisco.

Sasser died in the year 2013 just before he was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

Nobody knew the reason why he contacted the disease, but as per the stories revealed, it looked like it happened due to the HIV virus, already in check that he had for years sparked the growth of the disease.


Ed Lauter, Film and Television Personality (1938-2013)

Lauter worked for more than 40 years in the television and film industry.

He enacted a number of roles including supporting roles and main lead roles.

He has worked with so many leading actors during his time, including Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Tom Cruise and Charles Bronson.

Ed Lauter was in the mid of a project when he was first diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

But he could not survive for more than 6 months. He enacted in over 200 films throughout his career. His name surfaced in many stand up comedies and crime stories.
