It’s not easy to find a great romantic comedy these days, especially when most directors are not able to bring the right content to the audience. In fact, the joy of a great romantic comedy lies in its simplicity.

You recognize the promise early on, when those sweet, tentative moments begin to unfold. The story might be predictable, but that’s part of the reason it feels so right.

The makers need to show the most sensible things. And if something makes no sense, then it would simply be rejected by the audience. In this film, you can find two beautiful looking people who tend to fall in love with each other. predictable.

My Oxford Year, the new Netflix offering carries all of these above qualities. It is sweet and wonderfully romantic without trying to be obvious.

My Oxford Year’ Review: The Premise’ Mixes Humor & Hard Truths In Anthology Format

My Oxford Year is already showing in cinemas after it hit screens on August 1. The film has been adopted from the novel by Julia Whelan. The romantic comedy basically introduces us to Anna (Sofia Carson), a driven, pragmatic woman from Queens. She arrives at Oxford for a sabbatical year, determined to immerse herself in its literary soul.

The film shows how Anna is out of sync with her new surroundings, especially after an uneasy introduction to Jamie (Corey Mylchreest), who unknowingly soaks her with his car. She’s frustrated. It later shows he’s apologetic.

He’s the one leading her course. Despite the awkwardness, there’s a flicker of connection. That spark will soon grow into a journey that changes both their lives.

They say eternity is made of little moments. My Oxford Year runs with that idea in the beginning. It kicks off with poetic flair and emotional sincerity, only to make an abrupt turn. A sudden plot twist reshapes the romantic tone into something much more dramatic and teary-eyed.

Now, all the readers of the novel may find the adaptation more than a little disappointing. The rest of them ambles somewhat a bittersweet and unfocused route. The film takes a turn after some true intentions of Jamie come forth along with all the emotional on the face of Carson.

My Oxford Year’ Review: What works for the Film

Dressed to impress, the actor carries the role with confidence, even as the plot wobbles in the latter half with a rush of twists. Carson brings Anna’s emotional layers to life, making it easy for the viewer to connect with her and stay on her side.

Known for his standout work in Queen Charlotte, Mylchreest is equally magnetic here. It all happens after Jamie, bringing a thoughtful stillness to a character who could have been one-dimensional.

He’s not just the rich, charming lead—his nuanced vulnerability anchors the story. In doing so, Mylchreest earns comparisons to none other than Hugh Grant.

The energetic editing both by Kristina Hetherington and Victoria Boydell mainly gives My Oxford Year its pulse, capturing the ebb and flow of Anna and Jamie’s story with finesse.

Even as the film goes through some lighter moments, the underlying emotional heft is never lost. Director Iain Morris well balances tone and storytelling, guiding the romance with thoughtful direction.

Though the narrative seems to get unfold along familiar lines, My Oxford Year still succeeds because it draws you in well before its predictability becomes apparent.

Whether it’s through poetic echoes or simple cinematic moments, it offers a tender glimpse into the power of love to brighten the world. The film is quite light, romantic, and leaves a feeling worth holding onto. Let yourself enjoy it.
