DUPAHIYA Review: DUPAHIYA basically revolves around a village, a motorcycle, and a marriage. Banwari Jha (Gajraj Rao) lives in Dhadakpur, a unique village in Bihar that has been free of crime for more than two decades.
Roshni (Shivani Raghuvanshi), Banwari’s daughter, is engaged to Durlabh Tripathi (Godaan Kumar). Durlabh, accompanied by his father Keshav Prasad (Aalok Prasad) and younger brother Kuber (Avinash Dwivedi), comes to visit Banwari’s home.
Kuber mentions that he is employed with the Income Tax department and resides in Mumbai. Roshni, who has always yearned to escape village life, then reveals her wish to marry Kuber rather than Durlabh.
In a twist of fate, the groom’s family agrees to the marriage, but on one condition – they ask for a motorcycle worth Rs. 3 lakhs as dowry, plus fuel worth Rs. 2 lakhs.
Banwari successfully gathers the money and purchases a stylish motorcycle. To keep it out of sight from the villagers, he locks it up in the school where he serves as the principal. Banwari’s son, Bhugol (Sparsh Shrivastava), is a “Reeler,” passionate about creating Reels.
He missed the opportunity to make a video of himself riding the bike when he picked it up from the showroom. So, he sneaks out of the house at night with his friend Teepu (Samarth Mahor) and heads to the farm to create the video.
At the time of recording the clip, a thief unexpectedly arrives and steals the motorcycle. The next morning, Banwari Jha is crushed. Though he’s determined to find the thief, he’s reluctant to go to the police, as it would end Dhadakpur’s streak of being a crime-free village.
Pushpalata (Renuka Shahane), the village chief, is anxious to have the bike returned promptly, as Dhadakpur’s crime-free record could pave the way for her to become the next Sarpanch. On the other hand, Mithilesh Kushwaha (Yashpal Sharma), the police officer, who harbors a dislike for Dhadakpur’s residents, is determined to file a complaint over the theft.
Also involved is Amavas (Bhuvan Arora), Roshni’s ex-boyfriend, who gets tangled up in the chaos. A kleptomaniac, Banwari suspects he may have stolen the bike to sabotage Roshni’s wedding.
Dupahiya Story Review
The story of Avinash Dwivedi and Chirag Garg has great promise, and their screenplay brings it to life effectively, layering in conflicts and amusing scenarios that keep the audience hooked. The true highlight, however, is their dialogue writing, which elevates the humor with sharp one-liners, turning the funny moments into laugh riots.
Looking at the direction of Sonam Nair, it’s certainly quite splendid. It simply offers a fresh take on a familiar setting that may remind viewers of PANCHAYAT. However, DUPAHIYA adds its own flair with slapstick humor and clever one-liners.
The series blends the feel of PANCHAYAT with a Priyadarshan-style comedy. Some moments are wildly absurd, but they work, particularly in the opening scene where the girl chooses to marry the brother instead of the intended groom, and even his family supports the decision.
In yet another humorous scene from the web series, a character calls the electricity board to ask why the power hasn’t been cut yet, and the staff kindly assures them it will be handled soon. The show is filled with such entertaining and unexpected moments that keep the audience engaged.
The characters have interesting names like Durlabh, Amavas, Bhugol, and Ghuttan, which perfectly reflect their personalities. The relationship between Amavas and Roshni adds a unique element to the plot. While the twist may be easy to foresee, it still plays out in an enjoyable way.
On the other hand, the film relies heavily on cinematic liberties, which may make it challenging for some viewers to fully engage with the story.
It’s also a bit puzzling that Banwari didn’t show much urgency after discovering the bike was stolen, delaying his next steps. Additionally, while Nirmal’s (Komal Kushwaha) character arc is interesting, it ultimately turns out to be one of the show’s weaker elements.
Dupahiya Performances
Gajraj Rao continues to shine in roles like these, effortlessly impressing with his performance. Sparsh Shrivastava emerges as a pleasant surprise, with comic timing that truly steals the show.
He’s an actor worth watching more of, especially in roles that highlight his talent. While Shivani Raghuvanshi’s presence may be somewhat overshadowed by the other actors, she still manages to maintain a strong footing in the series.
Bhuvan Arora brings a lovable charm to his role as the die-hard romantic, giving an impressive performance. Avinash Dwivedi, Yashpal Sharma, Renuka Shahane, and Mac Lara simply excel with their respective entertaining performances. Komal Kushwaha and Yogendra Tikku (Sarpanch) offer strong support to the cast, rounding out the ensemble nicely.
Anjuman Saxena (Malti, Banwari’s wife) doesn’t have much opportunity to showcase her skills. However, Samarth Mahor and Godaan Kumar make a memorable impact in their brief roles.
The supporting cast, including Aaloak Prasad, Manoj Singh Tiger (Ghuttan), Smriti Mishra (Amavas’s bhabhi), Shriram Jog Dada (Kadak Singh Yadav), Chandan Kumar (Madan Kumar, the journalist), Brijendra Kala (Gyanchand), Pranjal Pateriya (Pintu), and Vinod Jewant (Parmaanu Bhai), all give competent performances.

The title track of Somesh Saha looks quite infectious and sets a vibrant mood for the show. The other notable songs, ‘Saiyaan Ka Chumma’ and ‘Meri Le Le Photo Va,’ also leave a lasting impression.
The background score by Saha adds a quirky touch that perfectly matches the show’s atmosphere. Piyush Puty’s cinematography does its job, while Veera Kapur Ee’s costumes and Shraddha V Vasugavade and Prashant Ray’s production design bring a sense of authenticity.
The action is kept to a minimum. Yashashwini Y P’s editing is mostly smooth, though there are a few spots where the pacing slows, which could have been tightened.

Overall, DUPAHIYA happens to be a non-stop laugh riot that’s worth watching for its engaging plot, witty one-liners, and standout performances, particularly by Sparsh Shrivastava, known for his role in LAAPATAA LADIES.
