Mark Ruffalo On His Initial Reaction to the Mickey 17 Script
Mickey Barnes, an unexpected hero, finds himself in a remarkable predicament—working for an employer who expects the ultimate sacrifice: dying for the job. Mark Ruffalo steps into the role of Kennith Marshall, the film’s primary antagonist, a self-serving and disgraced politician. Discussing his first encounter with the script, he shares his initial thoughts.
Ruffalo shared, “When I first read the script, it was both exhilarating and intimidating. I honestly wasn’t sure if I was the right fit, as I had never played a character like this before. When I met with Director Bong, I told him, ‘I’m not sure I’m the right person for this role.’ His response took me by surprise: ‘What do you mean? I wrote this with your voice in mind.’
I was completely stunned—and incredibly honored. The script was remarkable. The film tackles profound themes, colonialism, class struggle, dehumanization, superiority, and the fusion of church and state, but does so through sharp satire, reminiscent of Dr. Strangelove or Network. It’s witty, thought-provoking, and leaves a strong impression.”
Inspired by Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, the film is produced by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Bong Joon Ho, and Dooho Choi. Warner Bros. Pictures, along with presents Mickey 17, Kate Street Picture Company, Offscreen Production, and Plan B Entertainment.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film globally, with its theatrical and IMAX release in India set for March 7, 2025.
