Wicked Reigns at Japan Box Office
The film centers on Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West and her intricate relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch. Made on a budget of $150 million, it has become one of the top blockbusters of the year, with a sequel set to release later this year.
Luiz Fernando’s report basically highlights that Wicked has secured the top position for its second weekend, surpassing the Friday collections of both the 44th Doraemon installment and the live-action A Girl and Her Guard Dog.
For those unaware, A Girl and Her Guard Dog debuted in theaters this Friday. The report further reveals that the film earned around $525K on its second Friday, marking a decline of -42.5% from its opening Friday performance.
The musical fantasy Wicked has reached a total of $6.2 million in Japan. It is on track to soon surpass the box office collection of Dune: Part One, which earned $6.7 million in the market, according to data from Box Office Mojo.
The crucial report of a renowned trade analyst indicated that A Girl and Her Guard Dog, a live-action film based on a well-known manga and anime, earned approximately $425K on its opening day, securing the second spot at the box office. In comparison, Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales grossed $360K on its second Friday, reflecting a -31% decline from the previous week, bringing its total to $6.1 million in Japan.
Wicked has garnered over $473.23 million in the US and $261.88 million overseas, totaling $735.11 million globally. It ranks as the fifth highest-grossing film of the previous year. The movie debuted in Japan on March 7.
