According to a report from Showbiz CheatSheet, Swift confirmed Joe’s true identity as Bowery during the Disney+ documentary Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. She remarked, “Joe plays piano beautifully, and he’s always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things. And ‘exile’ was crazy because Joe had written that entire piano part.”

The article further explained, “William was chosen as a homage to his great-grandfather, William Alwyn, a music composer whom he never had the chance to meet. As for Bowery, it was inspired by the downtown New York area where he spent a significant amount of time upon his initial arrival in the U.S.”
From a creative standpoint, it suggests that Taylor Swift could be alluding to Joe as a poet due to his contribution to her album, hence the title “The Tortured Poets Department.” Additionally, there’s another aspect that strengthens this idea. In 2022, Joe Alwyn and Paul Mescal disclosed to Variety that they were members of an all-boys chat group named “The Tortured Man Club,” initiated by Andrew Scott. It doesn’t take much for individuals to connect the dots and draw a conclusion.
