During the late ’90s and early 2000s, Tamil cinema icon Rajinikanth faced a rough patch, with a series of flops casting doubt over his reign. But well into his 50s, he staged a remarkable comeback with blockbusters like Chandramukhi and Enthiran.
The real turning point, however, came in the late 2010s, when his films not only dominated the box office but also outperformed top Bollywood release, paving the way for him to command one of the highest pay checks in the industry, surpassing even younger stars.
At 72, Rajinikanth Reigns Supreme as India’s Highest-Paid Actor
At 72, Rajinikanth’s role in Jailer (2023), directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, marked a significant milestone, as the film became the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, earning over ₹600 crore.
Rajinikanth’s compensation for the film was ₹110 crore, covering his upfront payment and the film rights. Following its massive success, producer Kalanithi Maaran rewarded the superstar with an additional ₹100 crore bonus.
This brought Rajinikanth’s total earnings from Jailer to ₹210 crore, making him India’s highest-paid actor, surpassing contemporaries like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Prabhas, who typically earn between ₹150-200 crore per film based on their achievements at the box office.
Rajinikanth’s Incredible Fees at 74
Despite not matching the success of Jailer, Rajinikanth continues to command enormous fees for his projects.
Reports suggest that he is set to earn ₹270 crore for Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, contingent on the film’s profitability, placing him among the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema.
However, he has slipped down the ranks of India’s highest-paid actors, now trailing Vijay, who is reportedly earning ₹275 crore for his final film, and Allu Arjun, who is said to receive ₹300 crore for Pushpa 2.
