Imtiaz Ali explained that Shah Rukh Khan’s role in Jab Harry Met Sejal didn’t influence his artistic direction, assuring that the actor’s presence didn’t disrupt the film’s intended vision.
He did, however, acknowledge that he hadn’t fully considered the influence of Shah Rukh’s immense popularity when crafting the screenplay.
He further mentioned that, looking back, there were parts of the film that might have been better executed to align more with the actor’s grand image.

In an interview with GQ India, Imtiaz Ali responded to rumors claiming that Shah Rukh Khan had taken control of Jab Harry Met Sejal, altering his original vision for the film. Ali clarified that these rumors were false.
Imtiaz Ali further explained that Shah Rukh Khan never tried to influence the film. However, he acknowledged that Shah Rukh is a massive star with significant fan expectations, which he hadn’t fully accounted for when writing the script, as his focus wasn’t on meeting those expectations.”
Imtiaz Ali mentioned that with Jab Harry Met Sejal, his aim was to create something more “approachable and universal,” but later realized that this approach doesn’t always yield the desired results. “At the end of the day, it’s important to make the films you genuinely want to make,” he said.
In a previous interview with Mid-Day, Imtiaz Ali opened up about the difficulties of a film not performing well, emphasizing that a disappointing reception doesn’t mean every aspect of the film was flawed.
Shah Rukh Khan took on the role of Harinder Singh Nehra, a Punjabi man, in Jab Harry Met Sejal, while Anushka Sharma played Sejal Parikh, a Gujarati woman. It was their third collaboration after Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
