So, when a completely original indie project manages to outperform blockbusters from Marvel or Disney, it’s a moment worth celebrating.
This Indie Gem Just Shattered Box Office Records
In 2025, Ryan Coogler expanded his creative range with Sinners, a Gothic vampire tale produced by his banner Proximity Media.
With stars like Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, and a $90M budget, Warner Bros acquired the film post-production.
Upon its April release, Sinners soared at the box office, earning $272 million in the U.S., ranking third among the year’s biggest hits.
With Sinners, Ryan Coogler has delivered the biggest original live-action box office hit in the U.S. since 2010. The film surpassed Dunkirk, Crazy Rich Asians, Knives Out, 1917, and Nope. The last to outdo this record was Inception, which made $292M fifteen years ago.
How Sinners beat Marvel, Disney, and Tom Cruise
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has outpaced not only original films but also some of Hollywood’s most iconic franchises.
Its $272 million domestic take is higher than that of John Wick 4, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.
It also out-earned Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts.
Sinners Worldwide Box Office
Sinners may not have set overseas box offices on fire — collecting just under $85 million, but it still achieved a global haul of $357 million.
That places it ahead of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and Tenet. Even without IP recognition or a studio powerhouse, it stands as the sixth top-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, all on a modest $90M budget.
