Even if you believe that Barbie movie was all about the sparkle and luxury, you’re in for a surprise.
Behind the scenes, Margot Robbie went all out, gifting Ryan Gosling daily beach-themed presents to help him get into character as Ken.
Each day on set, Margot would leave Ryan a gift, wrapped in a pink bow and filled with beachy vibes. Gosling shared with Vogue, “She left a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming.” What did these gifts consist of? Puka shells.
Ryan finally confessed that he didn’t completely understand the “Ken’s life is beach” idea. However, Margot’s gifts weren’t just random, they were thoughtfully given to help him connect with his character.
And they did the trick. Ken’s character is the kind of guy with no money, job, car, or house. “Ken’s got no money, no job, no car, no house,” Gosling laughed. “He’s dealing with a few things.
As Gosling cheekily put it, “She’s Barbie; he’s just Ken.” Ouch. Still, there’s more to this version of Ken than meets the eye, and Robbie couldn’t be prouder of how Gosling played the role.
Margot Robbie’s Daily Beach Gifts Played A Key Role In Ryan Gosling Becoming Ken: “Ken’s Got No Money, Job, or House
She even believes his portrayal is “the greatest version of Ryan Gosling ever put on screen.” It’s a daring claim, but considering Robbie’s skill in bringing characters to life, it’s hard to argue with her.
Do you know the reason or the trick using Gosling managed to finally score the role of the iconic Ken? He didn’t have a big “bucket list,” but after reading the Barbie script, he was hooked.
“I felt like I was seeing myself. I felt seen,” Gosling quipped to Variety. “I think a lot of Kens will feel the same when they see this. Gotta do it for the Kens. Nobody plays with the Kens.” It’s a humorous take on Ken’s less-glamorous life.
While Margot helped Ken find his path, the Barbie cast was busy creating something even grander—a universe of diverse Barbie characters.
In addition to Gosling, the film features a remarkable ensemble of Kens, including Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, and Ncuti Gatwa, with Michael Cera reviving the forgotten Allan doll.
