The visionary behind the Deadpool franchise shared insights with The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday regarding the film’s impressive $211 million domestic opening and $444.1 million worldwide debut.

By 10 a.m. PT on Saturday, Disney’s distribution team saw that Deadpool & Wolverine was on track to exceed $200 million in its domestic debut, a staggering achievement for an R-rated movie.

For comparison, the highest R-rated opening prior to this was the original Deadpool, which brought in $133.7 million in 2016.

It all happened after Sunday when it was officially communicated that Deadpool & Wolverine achieved an estimated $205 million in its opening weekend, making it the eighth-largest debut of any film and the largest ever for an R-rated movie, not adjusted for inflation.
The success continued to build, with the final tally reaching $211 million, securing its spot as the sixth-largest opening ever in North America.

Ryan Reynolds’ latest superhero film shattered records, making a remarkable debut with $233.1 million internationally, leading to a worldwide total of $444.1 million.
This launch outperformed Avatar: The Way of Water from December 2022 and marked the highest opening since Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021.
Returning home from a global promotional tour for Deadpool & Wolverine with director Shawn Levy and co-star Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds spoke with While many believed the film might only reach $175 million to $180 million due to its rating, a Disney insider mentioned that the studio was optimistic about surpassing $200 million if it could attract enough viewers.
Reynolds offers his own perspective on the film’s triumph. “Disney might not like this framing, but I consider Deadpool & Wolverine to be the first R-rated film that caters to all four quadrants,” he shared with THR. “
Even though it has an R rating, we designed it to be full of humor, excitement, and heart, appealing to a broad audience, regardless of their interest in comic book movies.”
Disney and others might be reluctant to call it a four-quadrant film, a term typically used for movies that attract a broad audience across all age groups and genders. This is especially notable given that this installment is arguably the most graphic and intense Deadpool film yet.
Although the film leans towards a male audience, comprising 60 to 63 percent, there is still evidence supporting Reynolds’ claim that it is reaching a broader audience than usual for MCU films.
Steve Buck’s research firm EntTelligence reports that 13.6 million tickets have been sold for the film, comparable to the sales of the PG-13 Barbie from last year. This sets a new record for the highest foot traffic ever for an R-rated film.
