Christopher Nolan shared that a four-month maritime journey was essential for the cast and crew to fully realize the intensity of The Odyssey
In a recent update, Christopher Nolan spoke about The Odyssey, his much-anticipated 13th film, which brings Homer’s epic to the screen, following Matt Damon’s Odysseus on his dangerous journey home from the Trojan War.
As per a recent interaction with media, Nolan shared the much expansive nature of the story encouraged him to amplify his filmmaking approach. “We recorded more than two million feet of footage,” he revealed about the 91 days of production.
Much of the movie was filmed on water, depicting the path of Odysseus’ long voyage.
This is what Nolan has to say, ““It all happened during the last few months that we’ve taken the cast out to sea, where they experienced the real waves and real settings as Odysseus’ crew. The ocean is vast, terrifying, magnificent, and merciful, changing with the conditions.”
The actor further revealed that working on open waters shifted the way the story was told. “Our aim was to capture both the hardship of these voyages and the leap of faith into an unknown, world.”
The Odyssey is scheduled to hit IMAX screens on July 17, 2026. The film stars Mia Goth, Shiloh Fernandez, Rafi Gavron, Will Yun Lee, Jesse Garcia, Samantha Morton, Bill Irwin, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland in their respected pivotal roles.
