Trap, hailed by M. Night Shyamalan opens on Friday, but the film is bound to face stiff competition from the current box office leader, Deadpool & Wolverine.
Trap aims to make between $15 million and $20 million in its debut weekend and will vie for second place with Universal’s Twisters.
The disaster film, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, is projected to earn $17 million to $19 million in its 3rd weekend, bringing its total to $154 million domestically and $220 million globally.
Meanwhile, Sony’s family-friendly Harold and the Purple Crayon is expected to have a modest start, targeting around $6 million to $7 million.
Even with the arrival of two new films, Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to continue its dominance at the box office in its second weekend.

The film may see a decline in earnings of 55% to 65% from its impressive $211 million opening, which would translate to an estimated $75 million to $95 million for the weekend.
Already a major success, with $235.8 million domestically and $496 million worldwide, the superhero sequel is set to surpass Dune: Part Two ($711 million) and Despicable Me 4 ($679 million) positioning itself as the second highest-grossing film of 2024. Currently, Inside Out 2 holds the top spot with $1.5 billion globally.
Trap Box Office Prediction
Trap is basically a American psychological thriller to be released on August 2, 2024. It has been directed and produced by M. Night Shyamalan.
It stars Alison Pill, Hayley Mills, Saleka Shyamalan, Ariel Donoghue, and Josh Hartnett, in their respective pivotal roles.
In Trap, Josh Hartnett plays a serial killer who, while attending a pop concert with his teenage daughter, realizes that the event is actually a police operation designed to catch him. M. Night Shyamalan’s prior release, Knock at the Cabin (2023), had an opening of $14 million and ended with a worldwide total of $54.7 million.
Now, if Trap somehow falls short of the higher end of its expected range, it could be one of Shyamalan’s less successful debuts.
The director, who’s known for self-financing and managing low budgets, ensures his films don’t require huge box office returns to be profitable. Warner Bros. is responsible for distributing Trap.
Once Trap is released, it will surely gauge the performance of horror films in a year that’s been lackluster for the genre.
While Neon’s budget-friendly Longlegs has achieved notable success with $58.6 million domestically, other recent horror releases continue to struggle at the global box office.
Films like Lionsgate’s Imaginary ($39 million globally), vampire-themed Abigail ($42 million globally), Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($54 million globally), and The First Omen ($53 million globally), have not resonated strongly with audiences.
Facing stiff competition from the long-standing hits Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4, the live-action/animated film needs to make a significant impact with families to justify its $40 million production budget. Sony is counting on it to capture the interest of audiences throughout the summer.
Although Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine have achieved remarkable success, the domestic box office is still 17% lower than it was in 2023, as reported by Comscore.
The expectation is that upcoming fall films, including Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Joker: Folie à Deux, will help bridge this deficit.
