Amanda Seyfried Was Once Offered the Role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, Here’s Why She Declined
Guardians of the Galaxy became a major success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Zoe Saldana portraying the iconic character of Gamora.
Interestingly, Amanda Seyfried was originally offered the role of the green-skinned warrior but turned it down, citing her fears about taking on such a part.
The seasoned actress was concerned that the film would fail at the box office and potentially ruin her career. While that fear turned out to be unfounded, Amanda Seyfried has shared insights into her reasoning at the time and whether she has any regrets about passing on a film that became a major box office triumph.
Amanda Seyfried Feels Guardians of the Galaxy Would Fail & Hurt Her Career?
On the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Amanda Seyfried revealed that she initially viewed the offer as too risky. She shared, “Being part of Marvel’s first flop wouldn’t exactly help your career.” She went on to explain that she thought the film, with its talking tree and raccoon, might be Marvel’s first big miss.
Amanda Seyfried also mentioned that she believed after Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt’s career would take a hit and that she would never find work again.
“I was wrong,” she confessed. Despite turning down the role, she has great respect for the film’s director, James Gunn. She described him as a “genius” and a “fun, wonderful filmmaker,” noting that “he can make anything work,” which certainly proved true with Guardians as well.
Amanda Seyfried shared that she was “too scared” at the time, revealing, “I was in a delicate phase of my career, and I didn’t want to risk it.”
She also mentioned that the intense makeup and visual effects involved in the role played a significant part in her decision to decline. “I was worried about being stuck with all that makeup and painted a different color, like the X-Men actors had been for so long,” the 39-year-old actress explained.
Is Amanda Seyfried Regretful for Rejecting Guardians of the Galaxy?
On top of everything, taking the role would have meant relocating to London for six months, which clashed with another project she was excited about. Amanda revealed, “I was really interested in doing another film with Seth MacFarlane, A Million Ways to Die in the West. It felt like the right opportunity.”
When asked if she regretted turning down the role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, Amanda Seyfried responded, “I had done some green screen work before, and it wasn’t really my thing, and I don’t regret any decision I made.”
The Mean Girls actress felt it was the right choice for her at the time and still stands by it. She also acknowledged that the casting ultimately worked out well.
